Program Itinerary

Day 1 Departure

Your trip will begin by departing the U.S. or Canada.

Day 2 Copenhagen, Denmark

On arrival, check into the Hotel Skt. Petri. Enjoy a canal cruise to the port of Copenhagen and see the Old Stock Exchange, Three Crowns fortress, and famous Little Mermaid statue. Attend the Welcome Reception in the hotel this evening.

Day 3 Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway

Transfer to the airport for your charter flight to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, the archipelago’s capital. This afternoon, arrive in this small port town at 78 degrees North latitude, approximately 650 miles from the North Pole. Enjoy a glimpse of daily life here in the Longyearbyen Culture House. Embark the ice-class Le Boréal.

Day 4 Burgerbukta

An expert naturalist-led excursion navigates through slow-drifting ice by Zodiac in the pristine bay of Burgerbukta to reach the majestic Samarin Glacier. This afternoon, walk along the glacier and examine firsthand its dramatic terrain, frequented by seabirds such as black-legged kittiwakes and Brünnich’s guillemots. Discover the perfect snapshot of miniature Arctic wildflowers and attend the Captain’s Welcome Reception and dinner this evening.

Day 5 Calypsobyen

In the bell-shaped sound of Bellsund, surrounded by soaring, snow-covered peaks, anchor off Calypsobyen, part of Sør-Spitsbergen, Norway’s largest national park. Relics of the former coal mining settlement offer a glimpse into its history. Expert naturalists accompany you on a Zodiac excursion through Calypsobyen’s intriguing ecosystem, where nimble Arctic foxes live.

After lunch on board the ship, continue via Zodiac to Camp Millar, a former gold mining base and now a favored grazing spot for the Svalbard reindeer. Look for the graceful reindeer and the resident colony of little auks.

Day 6 Arctic Ice Pack

Approach the Arctic Ice Pack at the approximate latitude of 80 degrees North. Survey expansive sea ice for the “King of the Arctic”—the polar bear. Ice habitats are crucial for this vulnerable mammal’s hunting and breeding. Keep a keen eye out for these well-adapted creatures and scan the cobalt-blue waters for bowhead whales—among the longest surviving species in the world with a lifespan of up to 200 years—and social beluga whales, often spotted swimming in pods.

Day 7 Woodfjorden

One of Svalbard’s longest fjords, Woodfjorden carves its way 40 miles inland, linking the Liefdefjorden with the Arctic Ocean. Cruise past the islands of the Måkeøyane archipelago, where Arctic terns lay their eggs and polar bears often roam. Woodfjorden showcases the Arctic’s contrasts—icy, glacier-fronted shores are juxtaposed against the surrounding red sandstone mountains. Cruise to the startlingly beautiful Monaco Glacier and listen for the sound of white thunder as the tidewater glaciers calve into the ocean.

Day 8 Raudfjorden

Your expert naturalist guides lead an adventurous walk around protected Raudfjorden, amidst Svalbard poppies. Look for rare seabirds, such as pink-footed geese, black-legged kittiwakes, and glaucous gulls.

Enjoy a Zodiac excursion to the former 17th-century Dutch whaling station of Smeerenburg, today a prized resting shore for long-toothed walruses.

Day 9 Ny Alesund

Discover the hub of scientific exploration, Ny-Ålesund, where 16 international research stations function as both lab and living quarters for polar research scientists. Founded in 1916, this former coal mining facility was the launching pad for legendary Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen.

An afternoon excursion by Zodiac through the inlet of Kongsfjorden takes you to the tidewater Kongsbreen (King’s Glacier), a nesting ground for barnacle geese, common and king eiders, long-tailed ducks, purple sandpipers, Atlantic puffins, and snow buntings.

Enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Reception this evening.

Day 11 Return Home

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the U.S. or Canada, or choose to continue your journey on the Wonders of Norway Post-Program Option.
