Traveler’s Choice | Choose one of the following included excursions.
Florence. Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Centre of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to masterpieces of unparalleled art, architecture and literature, on a walking tour of the historic city center. Admire Filippo Brunelleschi’s iconic dome on the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, known as the Florence Duomo, known for Brunelleschi’s Dome — completed in 1436, with Gothic and Renaissance elements. In front of the cathedral, marvel at Lorenzo Ghiberti’s gilded bronze‑cast “Gates of Paradise” — created for the Baptistery of San Giovanni by Lorenzo Ghiberti, it depicts biblical themes in stunning detail. You’ll also see the Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s oldest bridge dating to 1345, with medieval stone arches and stunning views of the Arno River; and Piazza della Signoria, the center of political power since medieval times. Finally, visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to view Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the legendary 17-foot tall statue of David. Cap off your excursion with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in Lucca. (Moderate).
Lucca & Villa Reale di Marlia. The 16th-century walled city of Lucca is rich in Renaissance history, culture and exquisite architecture. Discover Lucca on a walking tour of the city center, encircled by imposing fortress walls and towers. Walk through the lively Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, an oval-shaped square built on the remains of a Roman amphitheater. As you stroll, take note of the stunning architecture all around, such as the Romanesque-style Duomo di San Martino, Lucca Cathedral; the magnificent San Michele in Foro Romanesque church; and the Torre delle Ore clock tower with a working 18th-century clock mechanism. Stop to visit the birthplace and museum of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini to view his piano, handwritten scores and personal items. Take a short drive from Lucca to tour the stunning historic estate of Villa Reale di Marlia and its gardens. The baroque palace boasts lavish interiors showcasing frescoes, chandeliers and antique furnishings from the Napoleonic era, and the magnificent gardens feature a breathtaking mix of Italian, English and baroque-style gardens. Cap off your excursion with a Tuscan farm-to-table lunch at Montecarlo Farm. (Moderate)
Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening.
Approaching Cinque Terre from the water is an unforgettable experience. Its five villages appear like vibrant jewels set into the rugged cliffs of the Ligurian coastline, with clusters of colorful buildings and houses clinging to the dramatic cliffsides overlooking the Ligurian Sea. Above, green terrace vineyards are carved into the hills, and ancient footpaths and staircases zigzag up the cliffs connecting the homes and vineyards.
You’ll visit two of the storied villages today. Vernazza is a picturesque village with colorful houses hugging a small natural harbor and postcard-worthy views from its rugged coastline. Monterosso is the largest village with the region’s only sandy beach and is notable for its fortified old town and the remains of Fieschi Castle. Stroll the hilly, cobblestone streets of the villages to soak up the enchanting ambience and enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace and peruse the eclectic shops and cafes. (Moderate)
You will have the option to return to the ship for lunch or remain in Porto Venere for lunch on your own and extra time to enjoy the coastal scenery.
Join your fellow passengers for the Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner this evening.
Enjoy breakfast on board this morming as the ship arrives in Bonifacio on the French island of Corsica, which you will disembark for an excursion.
Your discovery of this dramatically situated medieval town begins with a tram ride from the harbor to the Haute Ville, or upper town, and around the plateau to enjoy panoramic views. You will then stroll through Bonifacio’s 9th-century citadel, perched high on a limestone promontory, to see such historic landmarks as Place Bir Hakeim, St. Jean Baptiste church and Le Grain de Sable — a weathered rock formation that appears to collapse into the sea. Savor the splendor of the Jardin des Vestiges and see where Napoleon stayed in 1793.
There will be some time for shopping before you take the tram back to the port. Enjoy lunch on board and watch for spectacular views as the ship sails from Corsica. The rest of the day is at your leisure to relax or enjoy the ship’s many amenities.
Traveler’s Choice | Choose one of the following included excursions. (Please make your selection on the Reservation Form that follows.)
- Pompeii Tour. Engulfed by the tephra of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the ancient city of Pompeii was frozen in time for centuries. Excavated 17 centuries after petrification, the UNESCO-designated ruins intimately reveal Roman daily rituals during Emperor Titus’ reign. Take a panoramic drive to Pompeii where you will explore on foot to see the wealthy Vetti family estate, the extraordinary and earliest surviving stone amphitheater of the Roman world and the Temple of Jupiter. You will have the option to return to the ship for lunch or stay in Sorrento and find a local café for lunch on your own. Shuttle buses will provide transportation from the port to the Sorrento city center. (Active)
- Olive Oil Tasting & Cooking Class. Enjoy a warm welcome at Frantoio Gargiulo Mill, a scenic olive oil mill in the hills over Sorrento. Your host will guide you through fields of olive trees on the farm and share the techniques to produce delicious olive oils. Savor a tasting of different varieties, then roll up your sleeves and learn how to make genuine Neapolitan pizza! Relish your pizza lunch while admiring the amazing views of Mount Vesuvius in the distance. (Mild)
Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening. Later tonight, you will be treated to a traditional tarantella performance with Neapolitan songs and dance. Tarantella translates to “dance of the spider.”
Disembark after breakfast for a morning excursion to the spectacular Amalfi Coast this morning.
Admire the natural splendor of this UNESCO World Heritage‑designated Mediterranean seascape on a panoramic drive through secluded villages and past opulent villas and sun‑drenched beaches. Stop in the iconic coastal village of Positano. Renowned for its colorful cliffside houses, crystal-clear waters and Mediterranean charm, the town cascades down the steep mountainside to the sea, creating stunning panoramic views at every turn. Its lively, narrow labyrinth of streets is dotted with vibrant bougainvillea and filled with charming cafés, boutique shops and art galleries. Enjoy a short orientation tour and free time to explore this traditional Italian village on the Amalfi Coast at your leisure. (Moderate)
Disembark this afternoon for a tour of captivating Capri, the island where, legend has it, Homer’s Odysseus resisted the alluring call of the sirens. Visit the Augustus Gardens, a series of serene, flower-filled terraces that afford breathtaking panoramas of the Faraglioni rock formations rising from translucent waters and the craggy peak of Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island. You may also look for the ancient perfumery of the Certosa, Carthusia.
Return to the ship for dinner on board or choose to stay in Capri longer for dinner on your own this evening.
Begin today with a special visit to the Museum of the Landing and Salerno as Capital, accompanied by Professor David Eisenhower. The museum is dedicated to the events of Operation Avalanche, the Allied landing on September 9, 1943, as part of the broader Italian Campaign, and the period when Salerno briefly served as Italy’s capital during World War II. Exhibits include maps, photographs and military artifacts such as WWII uniforms, weapons, field equipment and jeeps used by both Allied and Axis forces, offering a glimpse into wartime conditions. A large-scale diorama recreates the landing, showing troop movements and key locations, and personal testimonies and videos provide an immersive experience of wartime Salerno. You’ll learn about this lesser-known chapter of WWII history and gain a deeper understanding of Salerno’s strategic importance in shaping post-war Italy.
After the museum, take a guided walk through Salerno’s historic center to appreciate the charming mix of medieval streets, historic landmarks and coastal beauty. Discover the Duomo di Salerno, a stunning 11th-century Norman, baroque and Romanesque-style cathedral with a striking 12th-century Norman-Arab bell town, standing at 184 feet tall. The cathedral houses the tomb of Saint Matthew the Evangelist, one of the Twelve Apostles, in its marble crypt decorated with frescoes. It features Italy's oldest surviving medieval bronze doors, made in Constantinople in 1099.
Arrive at the Giardino della Minerva garden, a 14th-century medicinal garden containing a rich collection of herbs and plants used in medieval medicine. The garden is a living museum designed on terraced levels connected by delightful fountains and staircases overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. In the botanical garden’s peaceful atmosphere, learn about the fascinating ancient knowledge of herbal medicine. (Mild)
You may return to the ship for lunch or stay in Salerno for lunch on your own and time to explore further at your leisure. Return to the ship later this afternoon.
Join your fellow travelers for a Captain’s Farewell Reception and dinner on board the ship this evening.
