Day At Sea

Be on deck for breakfast this morning as we cruise past the Aeolian Island of Stromboli, the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean” — a volcano mildly active for over two millennia.

The ship will arrive in at the port of Giardini Naxos, where you will travel with the group to Taormina.

Founded by Siculi (an ancient Sicilian tribe) in the 4th century B.C., this ancient village on the top of a cliff above the Ionian Sea and snow-capped Mount Etna was inhabited by the Greeks from nearby Naxos. The Romans conquered it in 215 B.C., and it continued to flourish until it was destroyed by the Arabs in 902 A.D. It was later rebuilt in 1079 A.D., conquered by Ruggero d’Altavilla (first Count of Sicily and founder of the monarchy of Sicily) and his Normans, and evolved into a commercial and cultural center. It was the center of Sicilian culture and commerce during the medieval era and today offers stunning views of the Calabria coastline.

A guided walking tour takes you along the Corso Umberto — Taormina’s vibrant cobblestone main street — to the archeological site of the Roman Odeon, the “small theater” built in 21 B.C. Visit the remarkably preserved, ancient Greco-Roman Theatre, the most dramatically sited Greek theater in the world that’s still in use today. You will also explore the 14th-century Gothic‑Catalan‑style Corvaia Palace.

Return to the ship for lunch on board.

Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Taormina and make your own plans for dinner. There will be time to explore the town on your own this evening, if you wish.

The ship arrives in Syracuse this morning as you enjoy breakfast on board.

Extolled for its grandeur since classical antiquity, enchanting Syracuse reached its zenith of influence as an intellectual nexus under Dionysius the Elder 350 years after Greek colonists first settled here in 734 B.C. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site is an open‑air museum of well‑preserved monuments.

Discover the city’s ancient past on a visit to the Neapolis Archeological Park, containing some of Syracuse’s most important ruins. See the Altar of Hieron II, a monument dedicated to Zeus and used for public sacrifices, and the Ear of Dionysius, a limestone cave carved out of the Temenites hill. You will also explore the park's Roman amphitheater and Greek theater.

Later this afternoon, travel to the small island of Oritigia — Syracuse’s maritime heart also known for its street food and markets— for a guided walking tour. Behold the most ancient Doric temple in Sicily, the 6th-century B.C. Temple of Apollo, which stands in the remains of Piazza Pancali. The city’s baroque cathedral incorporates the ruins of a 5th-century B.C. temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, where you can admire the unique baptismal font on an inside visit. The landmark Piazza Archimede showcases the dazzling, baroque‑style Fountain of Diana, adorned with rearing horses, charging tritons and maternal sea nymphs.

Visit one of the area's most noble palaces, situated opposite the cathedral, for a wine tasting. Baron Beneveto, a local wine producer, will host this special reception.

Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening as we cruise to Malta.

Be on deck for breakfast as the ship arrives at Gozo, the second largest of the Maltese archipelago of islands that lie between Sicily and North Africa.

Disembark for a tour of the island that includes a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage-designated Ġgantija Archaeological Park complex, which includes megalithic temples that were built during the Neolithic era, between 3600 and 2500 B.C. — making them older than the Great Pyramids of Giza. Marvel at their gigantic Bronze Age sculptures as you walk through the complex.

From there, you will visit the famous salt pans of Xwejni and meet a local family who will explain the history of traditional salt harvesting. Then, you will continue to a local cheese cottage for a Maltese cheese-making experience, which includes lunch.

This afternoon you will explore Gozo’s capital city of Victoria on a tour that includes a visit to its ancient citadel, known as the Castello. Fortifed during the Bronze Age, it is situated at a unique vantage point that offers amazing views of the island. End the day with free time to explore the local shops & cafes around Independence Square in Victoria, the capital of Gozo. Be sure to look for Gozo lace, pottery or some Luzzu (miniature Maltese fishing boats). Or try some local specialties such as kunserva (vegetable pickles), Galletti, honey and wines.

Return to the ship for dinner on board as we cruise to Valletta on Gozo’s sister island of Malta.

This morning the ship arrives in Valletta, Malta, for a day of discovery. After breakfast on board the ship, you will disembark to begin your tour.

Founded in 1566 by the Knights of St. John, Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s earliest planned cities. Malta has been strongly connected to Italy and Sicily since 60 A.D., when a shipwrecked Saint Paul the Apostle brought Christianity to the tiny archipelago. Today, it showcases incredible high baroque, neoclassical and modern architecture.

Explore the 16th‑century Barrakka Gardens and enjoy the vistas of Valletta’s Grand Harbor. Step inside the Grandmaster’s Palace, the former residence of the Order of the Knights of St. John and the seat of Malta’s parliament until 2015, before continuing on a special tour of the 430-year‑old Casa Rocca Piccola. This petite palazzo is home to the Marquis De Piro family and one of the last private unconverted Valletta palaces that still serves as living quarters.

From there, you will visit St. John’s Co‑Cathedral, built between 1573 and 1578, exemplifying baroque architecture with two large bell towers. Admire its lavishly ornamented interior and see Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s only signed work, the dramatic “Beheading of John the Baptist.”

Return to the ship for lunch on board, followed by an afternoon at leisure.

Enjoy breakfast on board the ship today before disembarking for a drive to Agrigento.

A scenic drive will take you to Agrigento’s UNESCO World Heritage-designated Valley of the Temples, where you can see eight Doric shrines dating to the fifth century B.C. Explore the Temple of Juno, which dates to 440 B.C., and the Temple of Concordia, which is still in a perfect state of conservation and is considered one of the most important landmarks of the Greek world.

Return to the ship for lunch on board and an afternoon at leisure with dinner on board later this evening.

This morning the ship arrives in the ancient city of Trapani, known as the “city of salt and sail.”

After breakfast on board, you will disembark for a drive to the medieval town of Erice, which features ancient Elymian and Phoenician walls and two castles surrounded by a lush park. Stroll through the charming old streets and admire medieval churches on a walking tour. See Pepoli Castle, which has foundations dating to Arab times , and Venus Castle — built on ruins of the ancient Temple of Venus.

You will have the option to stay in Trapani for lunch and time to explore on your own or return to the ship for lunch on board.

The ship departs Trapani later this afternoon. Savor dinner on board amid spectactular views as you continue cruising to the island of Lipari.

Enjoy breakfast on board this morning as the ship arrives in Lipari, where you will disembark for a walking tour.

The largest of the seven islands of the Aeolian Archipelago, Lipari is known as the mythological home of Aeolus, or god of the winds. Walk back through time as you stroll through the streets of its historical old town and note some of its most impressive landmarks, including a 16th-century castle that was built on the site of an ancient acropolis. Visit the Aeolian Archaeological Museum inside the castle to see some of Neolithic treasures that were discovered here. Your tour concludes at the Town Hall Square, where you may enjoy stunning views.

Return to the ship for lunch on board. This afternoon you will have the option to return to Lipari for time at leisure. Dinner is on board this evening.

Savor breakfast on board this morning as the ship arrives in Sorrento, where you will disembark for an excursion to visit Pompeii.

Pompeii. Engulfed by the tephra of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the ancient city of Pompeii was frozen in time for centuries. Excavated 17 centuries after petrification, the UNESCO World Heritagedesignated ruins intimately reveal Roman daily rituals during Emperor Titus’ reign.

Explore Pompeii on foot to see the basilica, forum, central baths, large and small theater, merchant stores and the Temple of Jupiter. You will have the option to return to the ship for lunch or stay in town and find a local café for lunch on your own. Shuttle buses will provide transportation from the port to the Sorrento city center.

Later this afternoon, immerse yourself in Sorrento’s local traditions and curiosities on a walking tour through the historical city center. The tour includes a chance to learn the secrets of limoncello and taste the popular Italian liqueur. Those who prefer to continue exploring Sorrento at leisure may opt to do that instead of the tour.

Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening.

This morning you will disembark after breakfast for a morning excursion to the spectacular Amalfi Coast.

Admire the natural splendor of this UNESCO World Heritage‑designated Mediterranean seascape on a panoramic drive that takes you past its opulent villas and sun‑drenched beaches to the iconic cliffside village of Positano. Enjoy a short orientation tour and some time on your own to explore the charming local boutiques and cafes. Return to the ship for lunch on bCaptain’s Farewell Reception: Join your fellow passengers for the Captain’s Farewell Reception this evening, followed by dinner on board the ship.

Following breakfast, disembark and transfer to blank blank blank for your return flight home.
